DFI week 6 Devices

DFI Week 6 Devices

1. Connecting with Manaiakalani - Dorothy

What has been working or not.
Main focus has been to keep using Workspace and Website integrating planning will be the next link, some issues to do with transparency and how we keep ourselves secure. This also has some ramifications regarding how we are exposed to vilification from parents who may disagree with or be critical of what is a normal working environment.

Being Cybersmart WHY CYBERSMART?
Using powerful proactive language to promote cybersmart.

 Retooling for education

Creating an environment that is professional and a mature process to teach students how to operate in an online environment. The curriculum (Cybersmart) was designed to be implemented from year 5.

Google be internet awesome. (Googles response to negativity around the internet).

The Love U Give focus on positive internet education.

Hapara Dashboard

Next session is about Hapara Dashboard hmmm this was good in that it gave people an overview of Hapara. However it would have been great to set up a trial class for pweople to access so that teachers without a hapara class or support educators could work through Hapara and have a hands on experience with this product. To be honest Hapara in itself could be several weeks of learning.

Manaiakalani 1:1 Journey

Chromebooks

The technology changes from year 1 to 13 ipads to chromebooks, but the language is ubiquitous for example create a title, save to drive, edit reformat etc.

Devices should be fluid, for example some senior students may require ipads for learning instead of chromebooks.

Digital Dig (learning how to sue the device ....efficiently....)should be included at the beginning of EVERY level and year.

Had a hands on session doping the digital dig great fun doing what my kids did at the beginning of the year.

IPAD

Year set up
assign different gmails to students set THE SAME password
assign devices to students
assign pens to students
label devices

Students intro to Kawa of Care

Whole term to learn how to use devices.
easy way to do this learn ipad skill lesson as part of normal lesson eg maths then they can practice skill all week in curriculum areas eg copy and paste work.

Assign only apps the students will use on ipads home screen and LOCK SCREEN LANDSCAPE

Start with basics all through EXPLAIN EVERYTHING.
create a project.

label
then use whiteboard to create learning, not too many boards in project as this takes too long to load.

GO THROUGH 1:1 IPAD PRESENTATION WITH ALL JUNIOR SYNDICATE>>>>>>>>>>
this is important.

Screencastify

Great learning here too will be making a video and uploading well done everyone.

Title Creating a Quality Blog Post

Intro; REALLY EXCITED about blogging with my class

WALT create a quality blog post.

Description DLO; How can I show that I have understood what makes a quality blog post? Today with Whaea Donnas help we created in our Google drives a poster using Google Draw. The poster had to describe the main things we have to include in a blog post.
1. Title that was catchy.
2. Embed a DLO (digital Learning Object)
3. Describe our DLO and how we created it.
4. Explain what I learned.
5. Reflect on my learning and where I can go after this.
6. Create a Question so that people will comment on my blog.

Explain what you learned about; I learned that there are 6 key elements to creating a quality blog

Reflection; Today was great I learned a whole lot about blog posting, the key part for me was learning how to scaffold my students so they are successful.

Question; How could I create a template that would enable my students to interact and create blog posts quickly and efficiently.

Visibility
This is about the understanding that the  TEACHING AND LEARNING is visible to all particularly whanau. Visibility to students, whanau, teachers and community.

Learning traditionally encompasses a pathway that is a bit of a magical mystery tour for all concerned, success in education generally involved students coming to school with cultural capital that programs children to understand how and what makes you successful at school.

MANAIAKALANI: The intentional use of technology to make teaching and learning visible.

Bio-data, some assessment, behavioral data, should not be visible but the process and planning stuff should be visible.

Student learning should be re-windable and allow students to front-load as well.

2. Deep Dive Exploring a selection of class sites.

Interesting and informative, the task structure allowed me to break down and think about some of the design elements critical to a successful site. The main thing I got out of this was the importance of simple obvious navigation and what is the visual appeal of your site. Another thing I noticed is what does your site say about you as a teacher and your class, does it represent a formulaic or innovative approach to teaching and learning. How much input do the students have regarding the makeup and information on the site.

How would you make your class site a shop kids and adults would like to visit, is it a shop that appeals to ALL types.

Great korero about sites with Whaea Gaylene

3. Leading Learning using a Google Site

Overview of setting up a class or subject site.

Visible, Learning at Home, Collaboration, Rewindable, Motivation.

KEY IDEAS FOR SITE DESIGN
PURPOSE.....what do you want your site to actually do.
PLANNING YOUR SITE.......needs to be a coherent design
THEME AND DESIGN........colour layout font.
THE THREE CLICK RULE.........people need to get what they want quickly and easily.
BUTTONS........can the students read?
CAROUSEL........Interactive imagery.
TIMETABLES..........When it is happening.

TIP FOR THE DAY

SHIFT Z to put files in more than one place but are linked and will be updated from whichever copy is being worked on.

Lots of redoing today but the goals were to make sure;
1. that all my links worked......checked and sorted, workspaces shared publicly.
2. made the website visible........reworked sharing settings, link in school website.
3. Check workflow so that minimal clicks for information.......working on this. but most info is easily accessible.

DFI Wk 4 Collaborate Sites

Collaborate Sites

Introduction  Revisit learning, from comments by other teachers was reminded about the power of google keep this would be a great way for students to take notes about their learning as they go. This can be linked into my ideas about forms link for google sheets in Workspace.

Connected Learners Share
Tohatoha sharing is a key component of learning and how we create and sustain relationships. Social media provides speed and amplification for thoughts and ideas. Social Media, You Tube,

Audience

This is part of a conversation I had this morning, I believe that we need to be able to critically choose our audience, this is something of a criticism of the ubiquitous nature of the Manaiakalani Kaupapa that we are expected to share our students learning Globally, many of our whanau and teaching community are happy to only share within our local community. At least initially this is an important step in educating our people about digital sharing, all on the net is not acceptable for many of our people.

Blogger
Hmmm some thinking regarding this space, getting the learning around cybersmart and safe strong relationships. Learning the cybersmart stuff is great but if we wanted authentic engagement we may need to include platforms that the students use (horrors) but like instagram etc. MAYBE.

 Deep Dive Multi Modal
Managing Eccentricity in your Sites, balancing appeal and learning access. Home page needs to change often.
Creating engaging sites to pull our students in.
Developing systems, teacher classrooms management that engage empower students to stay on task.
Making the sites are multi-modal and multi-textual. Balancing, creating and engaging with Universal Design for Learning, in this learn space we can leverage their learning up and down.

Important to understand about Multi Modal Sites is;

Multi Modal Sites (behavioral engagement)   +   Multi Textual Sites (cognitive engagement)

Google Sites from Scratch
1. Create direct from your Drive Folder New More Google Sites
2. Plan your site on paper first
3. Create a home page, Theme ie Maker Space
4. Create a banner, Learning Area ie Coding
5. Create a Multi-Modal resource.
6. Create a Multi-Textual resource.
7. Link to an assessment and/or task completion check.
8. Share options for students to demonstrate and celebrate their learning.

Multi Text Data Base
Great Data base with some good examples of Multi-Modal and Multi-Textual resources for different themes. I think this is all a great idea but quite time consuming to create. An idea would be be perhaps a Hapara workspace with a series of T Shaped literacy M/M and M/T lessons accessible by all staff/people.

Leveling Up
Finding resources that level up and down the learning. As we learned often our resources are aimed at the mythical average child in our class which when you think about it is erroneous. All of our students are either operating above or below that average level this means an average resource is essentially useless for cognitive development for say 90% of your students.

Create a Multi Modal Site

Blogging Tips
Downloading a template to organise our teaching as inquiry posts.

Reflection
Another very busy day but rewarding in that we covered some important concepts about share and collaborate in regards to Manaiakalani and how this becomes live in our classroom, also to get our sites working. My big takeaway for the day is the site needs to be LIVE ie stuff has to happen and change in order for kids to remain engaged and learning.

DFI Week 3 Dealing with Data

Dealing with Data

Google Hangouts meeting with people in Hokitika a nice way to revisit our learning from last week. This seems to be a "coming thing" re virtual meetings and coordination.

Create
The create model being influenced by people like Sir Ken Robinson and Ruben Puentedura is a great idea and I think the theory is good, especially when we look to students being able to contextualise their learning in ways that make sense to them.

Google Forms

Another great Google tool with huge potential but would have to say it will take a while to integrate this into our work flow and data gathering.
Like the Maths Breakout Idea from Vanessa this should be a way to help assess my students progress.

Google Maps

Using a data table from google forms into google Maps and creating a map of locations.

Google Sheets

HEAPS to learn here, almost need a whole day/week just getting this tool under control, BIG takeaway for me here is the cross when you hover to copy Contents or Formulas across a range of cells. Things we covered Level Up: Sheets and Forms
Power UP Tools look like a good way to access greater functionality in Google sheets.

Example of transferring Data from Blog to using Sheets, Drawing and Blogger.

DFI 3 Week 2

Kia ora

DFI 3 Week 2

My first day at the DFI course a very good experience but a seriously large amount of work covered, I kind of think I am relatively tech savvy so I could see how beginners would find the pace a bit of a scramble.

Good presentations and calm thoughtful support from Kerry and Vanessa, well done thank you very much.

Manaiakalani Learn; what does it look like in our school?
How does what we do facilitate/ enhance learning, enhance/facilitate teacher pedagogy?

Part 1 Hangouts
Great intro to something I haven't used much at all, I believe this could be a very interesting way to extend and develop some remote learning opportunities.
Part 2 Google Keep
Been using this for a while but like most things google I had no idea on the ways it can be integrated into other google applications.
Part 3 Gmail
Great opportunity to look at the ways to improve my work flow particularly managing email filters, linking emails as events  to google calendar and tasks great idea.
Part 4 Calendar
Interesting look at Google Calendar another part of the Google suite of apps well integrated and with bags of functionality. Would like to get students used to planning their work week and managing their time with this tool.
Part 5 Tabs
Organising Tabs and utilising bookmarks. Not a whole lot of learning here per say I tried the Tab organising tool Toby mini which seemed a great option for restoring your tabs but the tool loaded every time you opened a new tab which was intensely annoying.
Part 6 Hangouts in a Group
Very good session here and an app I have been wanting to use with greater understanding, I think it will be useful in the future but it almost needs a Netiqutte lesson all to itself, particularly reminding people that they are still visible even when the sound is muted.

Reflection.
Overall a pretty intensive day with lots of little its glaened and reworked. I would like to run this DFI program with my students, particularly the workflow ideas and linking this to managing themselves online, invaluable to start this early I believe.

Create to Learn
Creativity Empowers Learning
Digital Technologists Empower Learning

Engage Students with Digital Technologies

Learning by doing and engaging in higher order thinking.
Creating provides students with an opportunity to reflect and compare.

Learn Create Share is a reiterative process.

What ways can we create learning objects that demonstrate learning with our school curriculum?

Reflection on the Afternoon.
I initially had misgivings that this would be a Manaaiakalani lets do 'death by google slides presentation' but was pleasantly surprised by the meeting as a whole. The Create focus for the presentation was good but for me the task and learn part (making a video) was informative and fun.
How would this impact on my Practice?
I think the biggest thing I got out of this and something that is closely aligned with my own developing thinking regarding curriculum knowledge and learning (the essential premise being that learning is a social practice and it needs to be reiterative in order for learning to be metacognitive). Working from a relatively unscripted learning opportunity (in our case a 90 second video) students can be encouraged to understand that there are multiple learning outcomes for any given situation. In the case of the video just the technical learning opportunities were huge, add into this the literary, dialogue, language, social and interactive skills required make this a fertile area for study. With further reflection on my earlier notes I believe I would have to say I find the "fun" aspect could and is often a bit misleading, perhaps the word should have been challenging. Challenge is also a necessary ingredient along with social and reiterative?
